10 Ways to Reduce Your Cancer Risk

While no lifestyle can guarantee that cancer will never occur, experts estimate that a substantial proportion of cancers can be prevented through healthy choices. Here are 10 of the most important steps you can take to lower your risk.

    Don’t Use Tobacco
Smoking and other tobacco products are among the leading causes of cancer worldwide. Tobacco is linked to cancers of the lung, mouth, throat, pancreas, bladder, kidney, cervix, and several other organs. Even second-hand smoke increases cancer risk. You must avoid such second-hand smoking too.

    Maintain a Healthy Body Weight
Being overweight or obese increases the risk of multiple cancers, including breast, colorectal, pancreatic, liver, kidney, and endometrial cancers. Maintaining a healthy weight throughout life is one of the most effective prevention strategies.

    Stay Physically Active
Regular exercise helps regulate hormones, reduce inflammation, and support a healthy weight. Adults should aim for at least 150–300 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity each week.

Eat More Fruits, Vegetables, and Whole Grains
A diet rich in plant-based foods provides fiber, vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants that support overall health. Experts recommend plenty of vegetables, fruits, legumes, and whole grains.

    Limit Processed and Red Meat
Frequent consumption of processed meats such as bacon, sausages, ham, and salami has been linked to a higher risk of colorectal cancer. Limiting red meat may also help reduce risk.

    Avoid Alcohol
There is no completely safe level of alcohol consumption for cancer prevention. Alcohol increases the risk of cancers of the breast, liver, colon, mouth, throat, and esophagus. The less you drink, the lower your risk.

Protect Your Skin from Excess Sun Exposure
Ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun and tanning devices is a major cause of skin cancer. Use sunscreen, wear protective clothing, and avoid prolonged exposure during peak sunlight hours (generally 10 AM to 2 PM).

    Get Vaccinated Against Cancer-Causing Viruses
Vaccines against Human Papillomavirus (HPV) and Hepatitis B can prevent infections that increase the risk of cervical, liver, and several other cancers.

Reduce Exposure to Pollution and Harmful Substances
Air pollution, certain workplace chemicals, and unnecessary radiation exposure can contribute to cancer risk. Follow safety guidelines at work and minimize exposure to known carcinogens whenever possible.

    Do Not Skip Cancer Screening
Many cancers can be detected early—or even prevented—through routine screening. Speak with your healthcare provider about age-appropriate screening tests for breast, cervical, colorectal, prostate, and other cancers.
