The Nepal Cancer Survivors Society has submitted a 13-point memorandum to Nisha Mehta, the Minister for Health and Food Safety, calling for stronger government support to improve the health, social protection and overall quality of life of cancer survivors.
Among its key demands, the Society has urged the government to designate the first Sunday of June each year as National Cancer Survivors Day, ensure the uninterrupted supply of essential cancer medicines, and take legal action against those responsible for creating artificial shortages of life-saving drugs.
The memorandum also calls for comprehensive post-treatment support for cancer survivors, including regular medical follow-up, psychosocial counselling, nutritional assistance, access to education and employment, expanded health insurance coverage, and concessions on public transportation.
According to Society President Pramita Khanal, the organisation has also requested accommodation facilities for patients from remote areas undergoing treatment, at least one free round-trip domestic airfare for eligible cancer patients travelling for care, and the expansion of cancer screening and Pap smear services at municipal hospitals across the country.
Khanal said the Society has urged the government to implement the proposed measures through dedicated policies, programmes and budget allocations, arguing that cancer survivors deserve sustained support to rebuild their lives with dignity after treatment.
