Cases of Japanese Encephalitis (JE) are increasing in Nepal, with 58 cases confirmed and 16 deaths reported so far, according to health authorities. Officials say around 90 percent of those infected had not received the JE vaccine.
Dr Abhiyan Gautam, chief of the Child Health and Immunisation Service Section, has urged people to get vaccinated and seek immediate medical attention if symptoms of JE appear.
“Most people in areas where cases have been reported had not received the vaccine. We vaccinate children at 12 months of age. The vaccine works,” Dr Gautam said. “Those who missed the vaccine can receive it up to the age of five.”
Where Is the Risk Higher?
The risk of JE is considered higher in areas with paddy fields and stagnant water, as well as places where pigs and ducks are raised. The mosquito-borne disease poses a particular risk in rural and Terai areas.
What Are the Symptoms?
Symptoms may include high fever, headache, loss of consciousness, seizures and changes in consciousness.
Health authorities have urged people not to waste time on home remedies or traditional healing practices if such symptoms appear. Patients should be taken to a health facility or hospital immediately.
