Five Foods That May Increase the Risk of Cataracts

Cataracts are not caused solely by ageing and genetic factors. Diet can also have a significant impact on eye health. According to research by the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH), people who regularly consume foods high in salt and unhealthy fats may face a greater risk of developing cataracts.

Experts say that limiting the following five types of foods may help protect vision and reduce the risk of cataracts:

    Fried and fast foods
Items such as chips, fried chicken and packaged snacks contain unhealthy fats that can damage proteins in the eye’s lens.

    Sugary foods and drinks
Soft drinks, sweets and pastries can raise blood sugar levels, potentially contributing to clouding of the lens.

    Red and processed meats
These foods are often high in saturated fats and preservatives, which may increase oxidative stress linked to eye damage.

    Excess salt
High-sodium foods, including canned products and processed snacks, may disrupt the fluid balance of the eye’s lens.

Refined grains and excessive alcohol consumption
Foods such as white bread and pasta, along with heavy alcohol intake, may contribute to lens damage over time.

Health experts recommend a diet rich in fresh vegetables, whole grains, legumes, fish and lean poultry, along with adequate water intake. They also stress the importance of regular eye examinations and balanced nutrition as key measures for maintaining long-term eye health and reducing the risk of cataracts.
