Medical trainees staged a protest at Maitighar Mandala in Kathmandu on Friday, calling for improved labour rights, better working conditions and fair compensation for intern and resident doctors.
Under the slogan “Gen Z Government, Give Justice to Gen Z Doctors,” the protesters presented a seven-point charter of demands to the government, the Medical Education Commission, the Nepal Medical Council and other concerned authorities.
The doctors urged the implementation of labour law provisions limiting working hours to a maximum of 12 hours per day and 72 hours per week, along with at least one mandatory day off each week. They also called for paid maternity leave, higher salaries in line with government pay scales, overtime compensation and better mental health support.
The protesters further demanded the establishment of oversight committees to address workplace exploitation, a reduction in penalties for residents who discontinue training, and the removal of the mandatory one-year work experience requirement for postgraduate medical studies.
They argued that the current system is unfair to young doctors and called for immediate reforms to ensure labour rights, fair pay and a supportive learning environment.
