Five healthcare workers, including two doctors, have been suspended for one week following the death of a patient during treatment at Narayani Hospital in Birgunj. The decision has triggered an indefinite protest by doctors, disrupting healthcare services across the city.
The patient, 45-year-old Raj Kumar Patel of Birgunj Metropolitan City–25, died while receiving emergency treatment on Saturday. Following his death, angry relatives and locals vandalized the hospital’s emergency department and allegedly assaulted the attending physician, Dr. Pramod Ram, who is currently receiving treatment in the intensive care unit (ICU).
A six-member investigation committee has been formed to probe the incident and submit its report within seven days. Pending the investigation, Dr. Pramod Ram, Dr. Ram Kishor Singh, and three other healthcare workers have been relieved of their duties.
In protest, the Nepal Medical Association’s Narayani chapter has launched an indefinite strike, suspending services—including emergency care—at government and private hospitals, as well as medical colleges in Birgunj.
The association has demanded immediate legal action against those involved in the assault and vandalism, reinstatement of the suspended healthcare workers, and stronger security measures to ensure the safety of medical professionals. The Nepal Medical Association’s central committee has also condemned the attack and warned of nationwide protests if its demands are not addressed.
